Labour backs Beith calls for A1 dualing
Chancellor must put road upgrade at top of North infrastructure plan
Labour leader on Northumberland County Council, Grant Davey welcomed Alan Beith MP pledge to ‘press Treasury and Transport minister’s to make sure that parts of the A1 are included in the next round of infrastructure spending’.
With the news that the UK double dip recession is turning into a slump in most sectors and financial institutions including the Bank of England revising GDP figures from +0.8 down to Zero, Councillors from Northumberland Labour Group have added their voice to Mr Beith’s calls for George Osborne to help Northumberland climb out of its current worsening situation by kickstarting the county economy through Public Infrastructure Investment by dualling the A1 in Northumberland.
Northumberland Labour Group Leader Grant Davey said:
‘Through the increased funding that Scotland gets through the Barnet Funding formula the economic slump is not being felt as much over the Border. Upgrading the A1 will create much needed construction jobs in Northumberland and give a massive boost to the local economy. It will also ‘wire’ Northumberland to the newly evolving relationship between Scotland and the rest of the UK. It’s time that all politicians and business leaders in the North East spoke with a single voice and it’s time the Chancellor and his Treasury listened’.
Notes for Editors
Northumberland County Council has been planning this construction project for years and has all of the design work ready to roll.
The people and townships of Northumberland would see an immediate improvement as firms supplying Scotland bring work to our side of the economic divide.”
